“Rainbow! Can we talk to you?” The slightly nasal voice was cutting through the crowd. The Color Kids quieted instantly and turned toward the voice. Two men in trenchcoats were pushing through the crowd, not even trying to look like they belonged. One wore a battered grey hat, the other an eyepatch.

“Detective Mouse, Inspector Gadget,” Rainbow said to them with her best fake smile. The Color Kids disappeared into the crowd, all of them invisible except for Indigo, who was watching from about ten feet away.

“How’s business, Rainbow?” Gadget asked, adjusting his hat.

“What are you talking about, Inspector?” the girl answered. It was a game and they both knew it, but if Mouse was here, something serious was going on.

“Heard anything about some bad drugs on the street?” Detective Mouse cut in.

“Aren’t they all bad to you?”

“A couple of kids have been found dead lately with grey skin and hair,” Mouse continued.

“Grey?” Rainbow parroted, genuinely concerned and a little sick now.

“Yes,” answered the detective, his British accent creeping into his words. “You wouldn’t know anything about that, would you?”

She shook her head mutely.

“If you hear anything, Rainbow, let me know,” Gadget spoke, in a much softer voice. She nodded and the men left.

Indigo stepped up behind Rainbow and put her hands on the blonde girl’s hips. “Are you okay, Rain? Do you need to sit down?”

Rainbow shook her head. “No. We need to do something. Somebody’s moving on our turf and hurting our customers. I’m not going to stand for that.” Rainbow’s hands were balled up into tight fists. It had been a long time since Indigo saw her that angry.

“So where do we start?” she asked, letting go of Rainbow.

“Let’s go see Care,” the blonde said. Indigo nodded and they headed toward the parking lot.
