A cat in a strange corner,
unexpected, proud of itself.
The cat is white,
holds a small, struggling mouse,
and smiles.
Only cheshires do that,
a rare sight indeed.
Along the hall to the labs
there is confetti, scraps,
mouse-bedding, perhaps.
I bend over and look at a note.
It says “no signs of reaction”
in handwriting I recognize.
My stomach drops,
panic from confusion’s corvid mouth.
